Section 1: Project Rationale (approx. 100 words)

Since starting the course in September, what do you know now, and what does it mean to you, (compared with what you knew and could do before you started the course). How does what you know now influence your choice of pathway and your project proposal?

Since starting the course, I have improved a range of skills including 3D modelling, texturing, basic coding, Foley techniques, and creating scenes in the game engine. I feel that my main strengths lie in texturing and scene dressing in the game engine, however I would like to work on some coding and animation to add a level of playability to my project. I’m going to work on creating a game level demo, although I still need to work on developing my concept, as I’m not yet sure about what the gameplay will entail. Overall, I’d like to focus mostly on the visual aspects of the game level, as opposed to the playability.
Section 2 Project Concept: (approx. 200 words)

Clearly explain the concept and aims of your project and the context, research and ideas that will support its development. What are the historical, economic, social, mass media, cultural, political influences?  What is it you want to communicate and who is your audience? What access will you need to workshops, how will you use independent study?

My initial idea for the project involved creating an outdoor environment for the player to explore, however I then needed to come up with some sort of goal for the player. After some discussion with friends and other students, I came up with the idea of having a sort of scavenger hunt. This would involve having to collect various items from around the map. While experimenting in my own time, I figured out a couple of methods for creating unusual visuals that I wanted to incorporate into my game somehow, which spawned the idea of a “drug simulator”, however I feel that this could have some ethical issues due to the nature of the idea, so instead I decided to look for other ways that I could incorporate these visuals into the game. One idea I particularly like came from conversations with a couple of friends in which we discussed experiences with chronic illness and how we’d like to see our own struggles represented in a game. From this, I got the idea of creating a game in which a player character with various chronic illness symptoms must complete an outdoor scavenger hunt. This could include visuals that mimic migraine aura as a way to incorporate the visuals I originally wanted to include, while also bringing awareness to issues that aren’t often talked about and giving people an insight into something they may never experience.
Section 3 Evaluation and Reflection: (Approx 50 words)

Explain how you will reflect on, and evaluate your work, as both an on-going activity and at the conclusion of the project. You should describe how you intend to record your decision making and how you will document changes to your ideas as work progresses.  The evaluation should be referred back to your aims. It must be reflective (‘why? Because?’) and analytical rather than a description of actions completed.

Throughout the production of my game level demo I intend to record any research and decisions I make on a production blog. I will also include all my planning and progress throughout production. By doing this, I’ll be able to compare my work to my planning to evaluate how well I was able to develop my concept, and what changes I may have needed to make to it.
Section 4: Research Sources and Bibliography

Record the initial research sources, both primary and secondary, that you intend to use.  Your sources of research should be as wide as possible, including libraries, museums, galleries, journalism, articles, media, galleries, books, film/video, magazines, TV/radio programmes, web sites etc.

For my research, I’m going to use sources such as surveys and online articles to gather information about peoples’ experiences and opinions about the topics I want to represent in my project. I’m also going to use my own experiences as input for the project.
